The Car Czar: It's not normal for brakes to be soft when your foot hits the pedal
Q: I purchased a new 2005 Infiniti G35 with the six-speed transmission last year, and the brake pedal is soft. It is so soft that the pedal goes beyond the throttle pedal during medium-to-hard braking, and the braking power feels compromised. And yes, my foot has been pinned behind the gas pedal before. However, if I give it a quick pump before I go to brake, the pedal is firm and high and provides lots of confidence and solid braking. The vehicle has been to the dealer more than once, and the technicians there said nothing is wrong with it and that pumping the brakes is only necessary on "older vehicles with drum brakes." I understand that the 2003-04 models had complaints of "touchy" brakes and fast-wearing parts; however, I understand that changes were made for the 2005-06 model years. In fact, I drove a 2006 loaner today, and those brakes felt perfect. Any thoughts?
